Betis defeated Porto 3-2 this Wednesday, 14 October, in the Champions League, with a penalty by Isco settling a match featuring two comebacks. Santiago Giménez came on in the closing minutes to try to find an equalizer for the Portuguese team, but finished without scoring.
All five goals came after halftime. In the first half, the Spanish side created more danger, although Porto put the ball in the net on a play that was disallowed for an attacking handball after a VAR review. Thus, both teams went to the locker room with the score at 0-0.
Abde opened the scoring for Betis early in the second half, but the lead did not last long: Porto equalized with a free kick and, in the 61 minute, completed the first comeback with a shot by Samu, who had come on as a substitute. The visitors went from trailing 1-0 to leading 1-2 and took control during that stretch.
The home side’s response also came from the bench. Cucho Hernández came on with his team trailing and made it 2-2 with a well-placed shot. Late in the game, Isco converted the penalty that restored Betis’s lead and ultimately decided the match.
Giménez had little time to try to spark another Porto comeback and had a chance to shoot, but could not score. Álvaro Fidalgo, who also started as a substitute, remained on the Betis bench, so the two Mexicans were not on the field at the same time.
