Google announced a new option for running personal Android apps created with Google AI Studio through Google Play. A standard Google account is all that’s needed; there’s no need to open a developer account. The change makes it easier to bring a personal project to a device without publishing it for everyone.
The rollout begins this 13 of October in selected markets, including the United States, for people 18 years of age or older. The announcement does not include Mexico among the countries identified for this initial phase.
The idea is to create a personalized app with help from Google’s AI in Google AI Studio, then run it on your own device through Play. Google says these apps remain private, protected, and separate from the store’s public catalog; this is not a new way to publish apps for any user to access.
The next step will be sharing these projects with a close circle of family and friends. The company expects to add this option in the coming months, so it will not be among the features available at launch.
Distributing an app to the public will still require a different process: users will have to switch to a professional developer account and submit the app to the same trust, safety, and quality reviews that Google Play requires of other developers. The ease of testing a personal creation does not eliminate these requirements.
