Rey Fenix retains AAA’s cruiserweight title against Ricky Saints by disqualification

Rey Fenix remains AAA Cruiserweight Champion after defending against Ricky Saints on the October 16 episode of SmackDown. The official result was a disqualification victory for Fenix: there was no title change and no valid three-count in the challenger’s favor.

That distinction matters because the closing sequence could leave a different impression with someone who watched only a short clip. Saints landed his offense, but the outcome was determined by the incident involving referee Charles Robinson rather than a recognized pinfall or submission.

The referee confrontation decided the finish

Late in the match, Saints pushed Robinson into the ropes, causing Fenix to lose his balance. The challenger took advantage to deliver a Rochambeau from the top, but the referee did not make the count. Saints’ subsequent confrontation with Robinson led to the disqualification listed in the official results.

Saints continued attacking the champion after the decision. WWE’s published video makes it possible to separate those moments: the match was decided first, and the attack followed. The punishment afterward does not change the recorded result or constitute a separate match by itself.

An AAA championship on another stage

The defense had been announced for the broadcast from Golden 1 Center in Sacramento. For Mexican viewers, the connecting thread is the belt. Although the television setting was SmackDown, the championship at stake belonged to AAA. It was not a new WWE title carrying a similar name.

The finish therefore supports two readings that can coexist. In the match record, Fenix won and retained his championship. In the confrontation’s closing scene, Saints ended with an attack that prevented a straightforward celebration. Reporting only the assault or only the winner would leave out an important part of what happened.

Any rematch still requires an official announcement, date and conditions. The tension created by the finish may support another chapter, but that is not the same as a confirmed booking. For now, the firm point for anyone following the championship is that Rey Fenix left the October 16 program with the title still in his possession.
