iPhone Duo: does the folding screen justify MXN 47,999?

The iPhone Duo is now available to preorder in Mexico from MXN 47,999, with availability beginning October 23. The interesting decision is not whether to reserve one first. It is whether a phone that unfolds offers enough practical value to justify the expense. This assessment addresses that question instead of repeating the buying calendar.

The screen is the argument, not the novelty

The Duo combines a 5.4-inch outer display with a 7.6-inch inner screen, the A20 Pro chip and Split View multitasking. On paper, its advantage is keeping two tasks visible: consulting a document while answering an email, or checking information without constantly switching applications.

Our initial assessment is positive for someone already trying to work that way on a phone. For a person who mainly uses one hand, sends messages and watches short videos, unfolding a second display might add less. The recommendation depends on specific habits, rather than assuming more screen area always makes a better purchase.

Cameras and battery: what remains unproven

Apple specifies 48-megapixel main and ultra-wide cameras, with a 2x optical-quality option from the main camera. That should not be confused with a dedicated telephoto lens. Recommending it for concerts or distant subjects would require comparisons of detail, motion and low-light results.

We would not turn a video-playback figure into a battery-life promise for gaming, maps and mobile data. A bigger display encourages different behavior; what matters is endurance under that actual routine. In-hand weight, reflections, the hinge and temperature are other questions a specifications sheet cannot settle.

Two requirements worth checking now

The Duo is eSIM-only, so confirm activation with your carrier before switching phones. Apple Pencil USB-C support is announced for later this year. We are not counting it as a tool available on release day.

Our provisional verdict: its productivity proposition deserves attention, but at MXN 47,999 we would insist on checking everyday applications and carrying comfort. If you want a large display with you all the time, it belongs on the shortlist. If better photography or battery life is the priority, the folding format alone demonstrates neither. Waiting for comparable tests may be the most sensible decision.
