Vinícius Júnior returns to Real Madrid’s squad to host RB Leipzig this Wednesday, 21 October, at the Santiago Bernabéu, in the third round of the Champions League. His return gives José Mourinho another attacking option while the Brazilian serves a suspension that keeps him out of LaLiga matches.

The difference lies in the competition: the four-match punishment applies to the Spanish tournament and does not extend to the Champions League. So his inclusion in the European squad does not mean the suspension has ended or change his status for upcoming league matches.

Mourinho had indicated that Vinícius would start against the German side. That intention from the coach does not yet amount to an official lineup: what has been confirmed with the squad announcement is that the forward is available to play.

The return also comes with a message about high expectations. At his news conference on Tuesday, Mourinho rejected the idea that any player has an untouchable place because of their status, seniority, or position as captain. The coach said performance should determine each player’s place on the team.

As for the European goal, the coach put qualification for the knockout stage first, followed by the possibility of avoiding the playoff round. Against Leipzig, Vinícius can compete again on that path, although his availability in Europe and his suspension in Spain will remain separate matters.
