Alberta rejected moving toward separation from Canada in the vote held Monday. Preliminary results and projections available Tuesday show that more than two-thirds of voters opposed pushing for a binding independence referendum, a setback for separatists and a show of support for unity that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney celebrated.

The distinction matters: the vote was not about immediate independence. At stake was whether to begin the process toward a later binding vote. Although counting was still underway, the wide margin against the proposal set the course for the provincial decision.

Carney interpreted the result as a choice to stay united and work together. The leader, who grew up in Alberta, had warned about the risks the separatist debate posed to national stability, amid trade tensions and annexation threats from U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Dispute with Ottawa Is Not Over

Provincial Premier Danielle Smith also defended remaining in Canada. Her government put the issue to a vote in a province divided by the debate, while separatist leaders responded to the defeat by announcing they would continue their campaign over Alberta’s future.

The dispute has a central energy component. Those pushing for separation include opponents of federal oil and gas policies, especially Ottawa’s environmental measures, which they consider harmful to the provincial industry. That discontent also extends to residents who do not support independence.

The day’s vote included nine other questions, several aimed at expanding Alberta’s autonomy from the federal government. So rejecting the path to separation does not resolve differences over the province’s powers: those debates continue, even though a majority rejected the proposal to pave the way for a binding vote.
