The new Magic Knight Rayearth adaptation began airing on 7 October 2026 and is part of Crunchyroll’s fall season. The project retells the story of Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu; it is not presented as a continuation that requires viewers to know how the nineties anime ends.

The September announcement confirmed two consecutive cours—that is, two programming blocks that typically span around half a year. This describes the planned length of the broadcast, but does not by itself set an exact episode count.

Three protagonists outside their world

The story begins with a school trip to Tokyo Tower. Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki, and Fuu Hououji end up in Cephiro, a world whose crisis makes them candidates to become magic knights. Princess Emeraude’s call sets a mission in motion that forces them to work together.

The premise combines the discovery of an unknown world with the formation of a group. It offers an accessible entry point for a new audience: the protagonists themselves are unfamiliar with the rules of the place when they arrive. For those who know the work, the interest will lie in how the adaptation reintroduces those rules, relationships, and decisions.

What’s changing on the creative team

Yui Miura directs this version at E&H Production. Shigeru Murakoshi handles series composition, and Satomi Watanabe designs the characters. The music brings together Yuki Kajiura, Shiho Terada, and Takumi Ozawa, according to information shared by Crunchyroll.

These names describe different responsibilities. Direction coordinates the staging; series composition organizes the story into episodes; character design adapts the characters so they can remain consistent in animation. A new team allows for a different audiovisual interpretation, though assessing the results requires watching the episodes.

Manga, classic anime, and new adaptation

Kodansha publishes CLAMP’s manga in two arcs: Magic Knight Rayearth and Magic Knight Rayearth 2. The 1994–1995 anime is another adaptation of that material. If you’re starting today, it’s worth choosing one version deliberately rather than mixing episodes from the classic series with those from 2026 as if they were consecutive seasons.

The new production offers a contemporary entry point; the manga lets readers experience the story in its original medium, and the earlier anime remains interesting as an interpretation of its time. None of these paths requires exploring the others before getting started.

The fresh appeal lies in bringing the three protagonists before an audience that may have come to the genre through much more recent stories. The premiere need not rely solely on nostalgia: its first challenge is to make Cephiro understandable and ensure that the relationship between Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu carries the adventure.
