The Detective Is Already Dead returns with a second season, whose premiere on Crunchyroll was announced for October 7. Two days earlier, the platform unveiled a new visual focused on Siesta. The return continues an existing story, so the first season remains the clearest starting point for anyone coming to it fresh.

The title reveals part of the premise, but not the whole answer. Kimihiko Kimizuka was detective Siesta’s assistant; after sharing investigations and travels, her death changes the protagonist’s life. A new case ultimately connects the present with what was left unresolved in that relationship.

The mystery also depends on when we learn something

The original introduction places Kimihiko and Siesta’s meeting during an incident on an airplane. The bond that begins there becomes important to understanding why later events weigh on him. The series combines cases with a personal story pieced together through information about the past.

To revisit it, it helps more to remember who knew whom and what each character knew than to memorize a list of action scenes. In a story built around an absence, a revelation can change the meaning of an earlier encounter. That is why jumping straight into a sequel can leave gaps, even if the viewer understands what is happening onscreen.

The work began as a light novel

The story comes from novels by nigozyu, illustrated by Umibouzu. Yen Press distinguishes the novel edition from the manga adaptation in its catalog. Their volume numbers do not automatically represent the same part of the narrative, because each format organizes and develops the material differently.

This clarification avoids a frequent confusion when looking for what to read after watching an episode: “volume one” of the novel and “volume one” of the manga are not interchangeable products. To continue a particular adaptation, you first have to identify which series it belongs to.

Who is working on the second season

The premiere information has Manabu Kurihara returning as director and ENGI as the studio. Deko Akao is involved in composition, Yosuke Ito in character design, and 40mP and Yuyu in the music. These are production details; they do not constitute an assessment of the final quality.

The new visual puts Siesta back at the center, but it does not, on its own, reveal how the cases will be resolved. For fans, the appeal of this return lies in seeing how Kimihiko’s present connects with the mark left by his former partner. For a new audience, the recommended route is to start with the first season or the beginning of the novels and let the story reveal its connections.
