Vargas kept Atlas ahead before the equalizer
The first half featured several Chivas attacks. The club’s match report lists a shot by Gutiérrez that went wide in the 21st minute, an attempt by Roberto Alvarado in the 25th, and a free kick by Luis Rey in the 27th. Vargas also stopped an attempt by Sepúlveda to chip him and a header by Rey. In the 38th minute, a goal by Ricardo Marín was disallowed for an earlier offside.
Atlas took the lead in the 51st minute through Kevin Zenón, who finished a counterattack against Raúl Rangel. Chivas’ response featured two distinct moments for Sepúlveda: in the 74th minute, Vargas saved his penalty; ten minutes later, the forward received the ball inside the box and finished past the onrushing goalkeeper to set the final score.
Brian builds continuity; Calderón makes debut
Gabriel Milito praised Gutiérrez’s performance for his defensive effort, ball control, and ability to move between different midfield positions. The coach gave him a place in the starting lineup again after using him from the start against Querétaro; against Atlas, the player responded with the assist on Chivas’ goal.
Another new face was Leonel Calderón, who made his debut in the starting lineup and played on the left flank, according to Chivas. His appearance ended in the 65th minute, when Hugo Camberos came on. In the same substitution window, Kevin Castañeda and Santiago Sandoval came on for Richard Ledezma and Ricardo Marín, respectively, before the saved penalty and Guadalajara’s subsequent goal.
