Gemini changes free access: Auto can use Flash or Pro, not just Flash-Lite

Google began applying changes to model access for personal Gemini accounts without an AI subscription on October 9. The official documentation introduces a nuance that completely changes the headline: Auto mode can route queries that require more reasoning to Flash or Pro. It is not accurate to say that all free responses are necessarily limited to Flash-Lite.

According to Google’s help page, Auto will be the default setting for people without a paid plan. Most queries will go to Flash-Lite, the fastest model in that selection. Queries that require deeper reasoning may be routed to other models through the automatic system.

The difference is in smart selection

Google specifies that if smart selection is turned off, conversations without an AI plan will use Flash-Lite for all their responses. These are two different situations: letting the service choose based on the query or sticking with a single model. That difference explains why two people may describe different experiences after the change.

The announcement also does not promise that every complex question will use Pro. Selection is automatic and subject to the terms of service. To evaluate a response, you still need to review what it says and check its sources; a model’s name does not make a claim a verified fact.

Limits depend on the task

The same help page explains a usage system based on compute, with a reset every five hours until a weekly limit is reached. The complexity of the instructions, the features used, and the length of a conversation all affect usage. That’s why it’s not helpful to translate this system into a fixed number of messages that is the same for everyone.

Generating images, video, or music, using deep research, and requesting more reasoning can use up availability sooner. Google also lets users choose different effort levels for available models: a more elaborate response may use more of the limit. That relationship does not mean that asking a short question guarantees a consistent usage cost.

What to check if you already pay for a plan

For Google AI Plus, the company says it will email users with the date the changes will apply to them. You should not assume that the free-access start date is the same for every subscription. Model availability and current terms can be checked in your account and in the official help center.

For readers in Mexico, the practical step is to check the settings before concluding that they have lost a feature. This access update also does not make a price published in dollars for another country the final price in Mexico. The confirmed point is how models are selected, not that the free service has disappeared entirely.
